Yoga

I opened the eyes. The first thing I saw was the face of my mother, frightening pale, even more grey-colored, surrounded with snow-white hair. She did not try to say anything, just stood near the bed and looked at me. Then, other senses switched on abruptly, making me dive into reality: smell of cheap disinfection, sounds of voices in the corridor and above all flashing feeling of the body. Pain started to grow. I was in the hospital.

Everybody has his own reasons trying yoga. Curiosity, fascination of yoga’s body capabilities, psychological stress and health imply just several of them. My story developed from a different starting point: I needed recovery. Probably, because of that I stay so faithful to yoga through decades: it gave me much more than I expected in the beginning, much more than I even could imagine. This peaceful, peculiar and deep-changing knowledge unnoticeably grew through my character and life. It now reached the level when one is ready to share it.  Yes, I am willing to prepare my contribution to this thousands-year-old masterpiece and I will be happy, if you take part in it.

General

There are many hatha-yoga traditions (Ayengar Yoga, Sukshma Vyajama, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Vinyasa Power Yoga, etc.) and there are general recommendations for any hatha-yoga practice. Here are the universal yoga rules:

  1. All the yoga poses and the yoga practice in general should be pleasant and never make you feel pain or psychological unpleasantness. This principle applies not only to durability of poses but also to their frequency, number of iterations, breathing and mental exercises.
  2. Consequently, please, avoid doing yoga if you are ill. The enhanced blood circulation will just transport all the bacteria and viruses through your body, what is definitely not the goal of our self-improvement process.
  3. Traditionally it is not recommended to do yoga under the hot sun; here all yoga tradition have the same opinion.
  4. We do the basic complex before breakfast with an empty stomach. In case you want to practice some other hatha-yoga style (Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Vinyasa Power Yoga, Ayengar Yoga) take care that four hours passed since your last meal. You can eat small snack as an apple or banana about two hours before starting pranayamas and asanas.
  5. Folded blanket, thin camping or yoga mat will provide you with more comfort while practicing yoga. Wear light loose clothes (the less clothes you have, the better it is) and practice barefoot. However, socks are allowed to wear.
  6. Good balanced yoga practice contains standing, sitting, lying, inverse asanas and the last one relaxation pose Shavasana, exactly in this succession.
  7. The breathing should be done exclusively through the nose with closed mouth if not pointed the opposite.
  8. In almost all yoga styles, poses and transitions in them are synchronized with the definite breath type.
  9. The best way to handle superior poses is just to try to do them, day after day, week after week.
  10. After yoga practice, a practitioner should have a feeling of lightness and energy in the body. If it is not the case, consult your yoga teacher what you do wrong. Yoga must stay pleasant during and after your practice.

The essential rules of hatha-yoga are the following:

  • Consistency and gradualness in mastery of yoga practice.
  • System approach and regularity.
  • Moderation in everything.

The sense of yoga does not imply competitiveness. The practice is folded inside the yogi and the most difficult work on attention and concentration is performed inside the person. Day-by-day observation of tiny body and mind changes, joyful acquaintance with the own body and its possibilities, enjoyment and process of achievement of health and mind clearance – this is yoga I practice and want to share with you.
